There are often ocassions when when it's a really good idea to lock your workstation in one way or another if you're walking away from it for a while. The need to lock the computer and then re-enter your password can be a bit of a chore. All kinds of bad things can happen when you leave a computer logged in and wander off: from mischief, industrial espionage, invasion of privacy and nosey colleagues!

Because passwords are such a pain, people tend not to use them at all if they can get away with it or the tendency is to write it on a post it -note and stick them on the monitor. Passwordless computing is convenient, and ok for an ordinary home computer that's protected from Internet assault by a firewall but did you know it's still completely insecure. If the PC is just sitting there logged in as Admin by default, then any "attacker" can destroy the whole Windows install in ten seconds. Scary right? So what's the soltuion? We would say, a simple, affordable, straightforward login system that gives people a key to their PC, as it were.

This is where the Wireless PC Security Lock comes in. It locks lock any Windows box when you walk a few metres away from it, and unlock it again when you return, without you having to do a thing.

How does it work?
A tiny flea-power radio transmitter sits in your pocket, and the receiver plugs into a USB port. Whenever the latter can't hear the former, your computer becomes locked automatically. Simple concept which really works. Here's a summary:
  • Effective range: 2 metres and the computer automatically enters Lock Mode when the user is away from the computer by more than the effective range.
  • Once the computer enters the Lock Mode, a password is required to use the computer if the transmitter is unavailable.
  • If a user boots or reboots their computer, one of two things will happen:
    i) If the transmitter is near the computer, then it will be automatically unlocked i.e the transmitter and PC lock are talking…no lock mode needed.
ii) If the transmitter is not near (i.e an unauthorised user is trying to use the computer) then it will be locked and a password is required. Walking into range with the transmitter at this point will NOT unlock the computer, a password is still required. Furthermore, if the PC lock is removed either when the computer is on or off, the password is required.
  • One transmitter can be shared with several computers.
Key Technical Features:
  • Effective range: around 2 meters.
  • Operation frequencies: 434MHz (CE).
  • Transmitter Power Supply: DC 3V.
  • Battery usage: approximately 2000 hours.
  • Receiver Power Supply: DC 5V – provided by the computer through the USB port.
  • Software Driver: supports Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
