60 and sassy!
August 19th, 2010Most 60 year olds will find they’ve amassed a lifetime’s worth of belongings and it is probably harder to buy 60th birthday gifts for this age group then someone half their age. Because of their financial freedom, they are more likely to be able to pop out and buy anything they want, at any time.
Therefore, it might be a good idea to club together with the rest of the family and buy something really worthwhile as opposed to individual trinkets. It doesn’t even have to be an object that you buy - the whole family could pool their funds and send the 60 year old in question on a short holiday where they can relax and create some beautiful memories.
Perhaps you could treat them to a trip to London (obviously not such an original gift if you actually LIVE in London!), taking in a West End show and a meal at the Ivy. They may just appreciate spending time with their family so a day out to a huge shopping mall accompanied by some shopping vouchers would be perfect.
If this perhaps may not suit the recipient in question, an expensive piece of jewellery, like a gold watch, diamond ring or beautiful necklace would spoil them rotten. If it’s your 60 year old Dad or Granddad, perhaps some new golf clubs or a games console would put a twinkle in his eye?
It’s a myth that this generation are not technologically savvy. Some may not be, but the majority of sixty year-olds have mobile phones, digital cameras and laptops. And if you’ve ever seen them near a Wii machine, you might as well resign yourself to the fact you’re not getting a go!
Therefore, for the lovers of the digital age, why not treat them to this hand-held puzzle machine? Studies have shown that the more we exercise our minds as we get older, the less likely we will be to suffer from memory-related conditions such as Alzheimers.
This pocket-sized machine holds 2000 different puzzles and quiz questions - it will keep them busy until they’re 80!
Lots of 60 year olds get more time to tend to their garden than perhaps those with their children still at home. For the keen gardener there are plenty of things you could treat them to. Again, you could all club together to buy them a garden furniture set which they can use to relax in the sunshine. If they enjoy the garden but, because of illness or some other reason, may not be able to do the hard graft, you could arrange for someone to landscape their garden. This would make tending it easier, it would give their land a new lease of life and stoke their passion for their outdoor space.
You can even name a rose after the lucky 60 year-old. Imagine giving your loved one a variety of plant named after them!
Not only a perfect gift for their birthday but when planted, and flourishing, the flower heads it produces will seem like another gift months down the line. Bless!
Being 60 is only a state of mind (and body) - you are as young as you feel. Some 60 year olds like to be out on the town every weekend and take city trips to far flung places. Others are happy to spend time with their grandkids and loved ones, just pottering around the house or going on rambling walks.
Maybe the most important thing when buying for someone’s 60th birthday is actually ASK them what they want?!
